FRC is FIRST’s biggest competition. Each team receives a kit of parts and six weeks to design and fabricate a robot that is competition ready. The program brings teams together with sponsors, colleges and technical professionals to design and conquer the challenges the FIRST’s creates. The competition takes place on a large field with three teams per alliance. Each robot participates in autonomous, playing, and the end game to gain the maximum amount of points. FRC is hard, stressful, and mindboggling. But it is also entertaining, suspenseful, and tons of fun.
Jr. FLL - Junior FIRST Lego League
Jr. FLL is geared towards sparking interests in science and technology for young children (ages 6-9 and grades K-3). It is a hands on program that focuses on real-world challenges to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination. Every team presents their research with a “Show Me” poster and a mini LEGO robot that deals with the challenge. Every team leaves with an award and the participants learn about teamwork and the principle of Gracious Professionalism, one of FIRST Core Values.
FTC- FIRST TECH CHALLENGE
FTC was created as a mid-level program from teams transitioning from FLL to FRC. FTC is a student oriented program with mentor support that focusses on teamwork and respect. Students design and construct robots to compete and perform various tasks. The arena is smaller than FRC’s (only two teams per alliance) and teams can be a maximum of ten people and one mentor per team. FTC is meant to foster relationships between team mates and build problem solving skills so that the team can learn and prosper together.
FLL - FIRST Lego League
FLL is for the middle school age students (9-14 and grades 4-8). Like Jr. FLL, it is meant to challenge and encourage young students through science and technology. Teams research for a real life project, and design autonomous LEGO robots that complete mini-challenges on the “field” (a 4ft by 8ft mat). Along with the robot, the FLL emphasizes Core Values. This program is a step up from Jr. FLL and will challenge young minds to the limit.
